Yeah, we all have fantasies and one of them is living a healthy lifestyle, that world where everything we do and eat is in sync with our body and nothing can go wrong with our health. But sometimes, living a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge considering the food we eat, lack of time for exercise and all.

One of the problems in Nigeria is lack of activity and the fear of doing new things. Yes, we know what’s good for us, but just don’t find time to really commit ourselves to doing it because we see paying attention to our healthy as eating into the time we have to make money. The truth is, our body is the only place we have to live in and like all our precious things we need to take care of our body, if not to perfection.

Enough of the long talk already, I’m sure we’ve heard that a million times. Now, let’s help you get down to actually giving you options that can help you live healthy. A brand of water, Eva is out with Eva Fun Walk. Eva fun Walk helps encourage Nigerians to stay healthy and in shape, by walking, skating, cycling not just alone but with friends, families, neighbors on a road walk.

SAFTETY, SKATE AND YOU II

When talking about Skate Safety, we can’t overlook street Skating, I know people don’t want to hear this, they believe that vehicles, bad roads, pedestrian walking up and down and more, are obstacles that makes skating risky and a no-no to try on the street. But the truth is Skating on the street can be fun and adventurous. You just need to be more watchful.

SAFETY TIP 2
GOING TO THE STREET? YOU WILL NEED ALL YOUR SENSES.

Let me give you one pro trick to street skating, learn and perfect your skating skills before going out to skate on the street. Learn how to control your speed, how to stop, turn, jump and maneuver your way and how to fall skillfully before going out to a public place to skate. Aside helping you with safety precautions, it also helps boost your confidence. People won’t know how much work you’ve put into perfecting those skills, all they know is that you are good.

One of the most dangerous things on the road is a skater who never learned how to maneuver skillfully. Always use caution when skating in areas with lot of okadas (motor cycles) cars, pedestrians, and people with sharp tongue and negative opinions.

Avoid sudden stops and last minute turns. You don't want to surprise anyone. What comes handy here is slang popular with Naija skaters. It goes like this… SKATEEA!!! MAKE WAY! You have to be loud enough to distract attention. When people turn to look at the source of the noise, they see you and clear the way before you get to them.

When you're skating in an area with a lot of traffic, you might also want to glance back over your shoulder every 10 or 20 seconds. There is nothing as unbalancing as an unexpected vehicle honking

You might also want to slow down your speed when skating around pedestrian. Don’t swing your arms and leg wildly back and forth as you skate.
Another trick is, when on the street; let your imaginations be sharp. Anticipate people, vehicles next move and avoid it. Oh, hand signals also come in handy.

I use Yaba BRT lane going to Oyingbo more. Mornings are no-no because it’s busy, but evening is perfect. I scouted for that spot. One thing we have issue with is getting a good spot to skate. Don’t worry; I will talk about that soon. And please don’t forget to ask questions or leave a comment. Thanks.

SAFETY, SKATE AND YOU!

Safety on skate can’t be over emphasise, considering the fact that that’s one big issue Nigerians have concerning inline skating. So, I will continue to talk about safety until I’ve been able to remove the misconception that skating is too risky a sport to get involve with. So for a couple of update I will be talking about Inline skating safety. That is, how to anticipate and avoid skating hazards.

Your chance of being injured on inline skates will be greatly reduced if you are aware of potential hazards and you know how to avoid them. Whenever you skate, pay attention to your surroundings, debris on the road and keep your eyes and ears open. Don't let yourself be surprised by changes in the terrain or the unexpected actions of other people. I started my first few on a street of a hood and you know what that means, lots of people moving around, throwing lots of negative reactions at you. And this can sometimes be distracting.

SAFETY TIP 1
PROTECT YOUR BODY LIKE IT’S ALL YOU’VE GOT

I wouldn’t say I have had any major serious injury in some of my skating falls. But my first bruised fall was caused by debris on the paved road I was skating. Sometimes you can’t avoid coming across water or dirt on the road and tripping on them. But you can avoid getting bruise by padding yourself.

Don’t be like me, I learned most of these things I share in a hard way. For those that have been skating for a long time, they will understand. We all know what’s right but just postpone them. So, always wear your protection kits. Don’t postpone buying them. I didn’t wear a hand glove until I had a bruise on it, don’t wait until then.

Look at the glove of those who skate often, their glove is literally covered with scrapes and scratches and dents. My point, buy your protection kits first before buying your skates, if you want to knock off that fear and be safe on skate.

Please, feel free to comment and ask any question. will be glad to answer your concerns.

FAQ: WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS?

Posted by NaijaFollowMySkater

You do not need any special skills, superior strength, previous skating experience, great endurance, gymnastics history, or youth to enjoy inline skating.

Inline skating is a great way to stay in shape while having fun. But, there are some important things to consider before strapping yourself into your new, used or borrowed skates. Any activity more strenuous than walking, requires that you consider your physical limitations before participating, skating included. If you have arthritis, a heart condition, breathing irregularities, a chronic illness, skeletal problems or any other medical concerns, make sure you talk to your doctor about inline skating activities before purchasing a pair of skates. If you have not had a medical examination recently, now is a great time to get a complete physical checkup. After a few months of inline skating, your doctor will be pleased with your condition and so will you.

Plus, If you haven’t done this already, get a helmet and wrist guards to use with your inline skates. Knee pads and elbow pads are also available.

Knowledge is power, and the more things you take into consideration while preparing for inline skating activities, the more satisfying your skating experience will be.
