Many people quit their exercise routines out of boredom. It’s no fun when you exercise by yourself, which is the case with most forms of exercise. Roller skating is a sport where you can find yourself in a group of people doing the same thing. Although some of them are not skating for exercise; they are there for the fun, music, and socializing. However, whether you skate for the great aerobic benefits, or focus in on the anaerobic and strength training. Much of the information can apply to many different skating goals, and is meant to give you a knowledge base which can be used for life.

According to medical research, rollerskating and rollerblading rank in the top 3 activities that improve or maintain physical fitness and general well-being. The medical world has declared roller skating/blading better for your health than jogging. Skating at 20 MPH, a skater burns 6 calories per minute or 360 calories per hour. LEARN HOW TO GAIN CONFIDENCE ON SKATE

Are you one of those who see skaters around and suddenly wish you too can skate? You are not alone on that, skating is actually an attractive sport. But then something stops some people from taking that attraction further. That thing is FEAR, the fear of falling and getting injured. Am sure sometimes, you wish skating could just be as simple as walking. Conquering your fear is a huge task in skating, so I want to dedicate this update on.

Let me make this clear from here, you can’t avoid falling, it’s part of the fun of becoming a good skateea(skater). There are ways though that you can get past that and eventually build confidence in yourself. Skating is not as hard you think, 80% of the reason why some folks don’t want to skate is this fear...but the good news is - that’s how far the fear can go. Because by the time you start skating, you will realise that there are ways you can master it.

So...let get this right;
- Accept that sometimes you will fall.
- But most falls don’t result in injury..

finally, here are some tips that will help you get past your unhealthy fear of skating;



First off, make sure you are seriously padded! For me, when I first started out, I didn’t think too much of that, and my palms suffered for it. So get your knee pads, your leg and elbow pads, your helmets and hand glove. I even heard there is a padded short...lol. Don’t be bothered about how funny you look padded, what matters is that, you will eliminate the fear of falling and eventually begin to feel confident.


Practice! Practice! and Practice! until you dnt feel scared anymore. In fact...wear it to bed. lol, just kidding! Most Skateeas don’t want to hear this, but in all seriousness, practise is important in skating. Practise makes your body get use to skating and falling. It helps develop your reflexes. The more you do it, the more you’ll see that you can do it.


Now is the time to keep your friends closer, practise with friends that will encourage you. My skating abilities didn’t jump fast because I surrounded myself with skateeas that are constantly challenging each other. All they want is to see who can do the best stunt. They were more concered about themselves than me. But with good friends, they will harass you when you are scared, and help you push through it.


Take your time; learn at your own speed. Just like Rome wasn't built in a day so is being a pro in skate can’t be achieved in a month. A lot of time, falling comes from pushing yourself too hard. Maybe you just bought your skates last week, and today you're trying to do some stunts. If you are scared, well, that might mean that it's a little too soon for you to do that.
Take your time - learn at your own speed.
Being relaxed and loose will help your skating in so many ways. Relax, breathe, and learn at your own pace.


Practise falling. Falling is part of learning...this is true more to life than even skating. If after all of that you still feel scared then confront your fears. Learn how to fall. It might sound wired but it helps. It would be great though to simply learn not to fall at all, but falling is part of skating. Learning how to fall correctly while skating is important too. I will talk in detail about how to fall in my other updates.
